The Ridgeway 40 Walk

The Ridgeway 40 is a long distance, linear event of 40 miles held on Saturday 9 May 2026. The route runs from Avebury Sports and Social Club to the Morrell Room, Church Lane, Streatley RG8 9HT. The course follows the Herepath and then the ancient Ridgeway track across undulating chalk downlands of Wiltshire, Oxfordshire and Berkshire.

Event logistics include checkpoint monitoring, refreshments and first aid provision at checkpoints, and an emailed certificate for those who finish within the event time limits. A cloth completion badge is provided free to finishers; snacks and drinks are available at most checkpoints and there are refreshments at the finish. Maps referenced are Landranger 173 and 174 or equivalents, and a route map is downloadable from the event website. Entrants must register via the SiEntries system; no entries are accepted on the day. The event capacity is 250 and minimum age is 14 on the event date. Entry fees are listed separately for LDWA members and non members; a coach to the start is available for an additional fee. Entrants who miss checkpoint closing times will be retired and must arrange their own onward transport if needed.

The walk has historic roots dating to 1962 and retains a link with Streatley hostel. The route passes notable prehistoric and historic features including Bronze Age tumuli, Iron Age hill forts such as Barbury Castle and Liddington, the Neolithic Wayland Smithy, and the Uffington Castle area with its White Horse hill figure.
