The Observatory Loop Relay
The Observatory Loop Relay is a trail relay race run as a 4-leg team event. Teams of two alternate laps around a single loop that is one mile long. Each team completes four laps in total, so each runner covers two laps with a break between efforts. Teams exchange a baton in a marked Exchange Zone where the East and West Observatory trails meet.
The course begins and ends just off the road on Fern Dell Road, opposite the Trails Cafe in Griffith Park, and combines the East and West Observatory trails. The footing is described as smooth and the slopes are fairly gradual in both directions.
Participants receive two bibs with their team name; the runner completing the second and fourth legs must wear the bib with the timing chip on the back to record the official time. All finishers take home a branded baton. Headlamps or an equivalent light source are required while on the course and should be charged or have fresh batteries.
Logistics include a check-in area next to the playground across from the Trails Cafe, designated check-in tables by division, and available street and lot parking along Fern Dell. Early packet pickup is offered at REI Burbank on the listed pre-race date, with additional pickup available on race day. The event also features a team name and costume contest and a Strava segment challenge with event-related prizes. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
