The Naturalist - Franklin, NC

The Naturalist is a trail race in Franklin, North Carolina, held on October 3, 2026 and organized by Outdoor 76. The course follows sections of the historic Bartram Trail, beginning in downtown Franklin and routing runners to Wallace Branch before a sustained ascent toward Wayah Bald. All participants receive a custom pint glass.

Two distances are offered:

• 25K: roughly 5,500 feet elevation gain, finishes atop Wayah Bald.
• 50K: exceeds 8,500 feet elevation gain, loops Wayah Bald and returns along the trail.

Aid and support are provided at multiple stations stocked with water, electrolyte drinks, fruit, energy bars and snacks. Runners are advised to carry at least 1 liter of water for the Wayah Bald ascent. Aid stations are located at mile 3.5 (Wallace Branch, limited aid), mile 9 (Harrison Gap), mile 14.5 (Wayah Bald summit), mile 19.5 (Harrison Gap return, 50K only), and mile 25 (Wallace Branch return, 50K only).

Race logistics include a field limit capped at 150 entrants and limited parking at Wayah Bald. A free shuttle returns 25K runners to the start on race day. Check in is available Friday evening at Outdoor 76 and on-site the morning of the race. Post-race amenities include live music, craft beer, food trucks and awards.
