The Maverick Dark Castle Trail : Corfe Castle, Dorset

The Maverick Dark Castle Trail is an evening trail running event held at Corfe Castle on Friday 20 November 2026. The route starts from the village area near the castle and runners travel across Corfe Common and up onto Knowle Hill, with views across Purbeck and Poole Harbour. The event includes running in the dark and passes close to the Corfe Castle ruins.

Routes offered:

  • 15 km long route, +243 m elevation
  • 11 km middle route, +225 m elevation
  • 5 km short route, +120 m elevation

Course surfaces include soft, muddy trail sections, some hard-packed stretches and short road sections. The long and middle routes continue along a ridge to Stone Hill Down and include tight singletrack through woodland and heath where Sika deer may be present. The long route has one outpost at about 7 km; the middle and short routes have no outpost. Outpost drinks are served from self-serve barrels, so participants should bring a reusable cup or bottle. There are no toilets along the running routes; toilets are available only in the start/finish area. The car park is a 15 to 20 minute walk from the main venue area. Headphones are not permitted. Recommended kit includes a headtorch or chest torch, trail shoes, water bottle or running pack, and clothing suitable for wet and cool conditions.
