The John Cappis

The John Cappis is a high-altitude, mostly off-trail mountain run held around Silverton, CO. The course is unmarked and a GPS track is provided. The intended distance is approximately 50k with about 19,000 ft of elevation gain, and route elevations range roughly from 9,300 ft to 13,300 ft. Runners receive credit for the distance they cover within the time limit, which is generally 19 hours (some courses have allowed 20 hours in past years).

The event is managed through a controlled entry process. The run is currently full and uses a waitlist system; applicants are reviewed for qualifications before promotion to registered entrant. Entry is restricted to members of the organizing club and to participants with appropriate mountain experience and navigation skills.

Much of the course is remote and support is limited compared with typical ultras. There are multiple objective hazards associated with steep, rugged terrain and high altitude. Participants should be experienced with off-trail travel, route finding, assessing mountain weather, and appropriate gear for exposed conditions; some years have required ice axes and traction devices. Crew access is permitted only at designated points; pacers and caches are not allowed and GPS navigation is strongly advised. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
