The Grizzly

The Grizzly is a springtime, mixed‑terrain running event that starts and finishes in Seaton, East Devon. The near 20 mile Grizzly route uses beaches, lanes, roads, cliff paths, tracks through fields and woods, thigh‑deep bogs, at least one river crossing and sections that pass a pub garden. A shorter race, the Cub, covers about 9 miles and still includes elevation, beach running and a river crossing.

The event is organised entirely by local volunteers and attracts runners from the region, the rest of the country and overseas, with around 2,000 entrants across both races each year. Since 1988 the event has raised over £500,000 for local clubs, schools, community groups and charities. All finishers receive wooden medals; top finishers receive handcrafted plates made by a local potter.

Both races are designated running races. Runners are required to run the majority of the route and to maintain an average pace of 19 minutes per mile to meet enforced shortcut and cut‑off points. Dedicated marshals enforce these points; failure to follow marshal or official instructions may result in removal of a race number and withdrawal of event insurance.

Course maps and a town centre map are published by the organisers. Parts of the route cross private land and should not be used for training except on race day.
