The Gambler Last Man Standing - Pelham, AL - February 27, 2027
The Gambler Last Man Standing is a lap-style endurance event held at Oak Mountain State Park in Pelham, Alabama, organized by The Running Birds. Competitors run repeated 2-mile loops that are clearly marked and consist mostly of trails with a few short road sections; part of the course runs beside a lake. Each 2-mile loop has an elevation gain of 183 feet.
The format awards one poker chip per completed lap; each chip represents one US dollar and a competitor may collect up to 50 chips (100 miles). Competitors may cash out or donate their accumulated chips only at specific milestone laps. To be eligible for the Last Man Standing Bucket, the final lap must be started and completed solo. The Last Man Standing Bucket begins with $200 and grows with donated chips from eliminated runners.
Cash-out milestone laps:
- 5 laps (10 miles)
- 10 laps (20 miles)
- 15 laps (30 miles)
- 20 laps (40 miles)
- 25 laps (50 miles)
- 30 laps (60 miles)
- 35 laps (70 miles)

Pacers are allowed only between 20 and 100 miles and only one pacer may be with a runner at a time. After 100 miles no more poker chips, no cash-outs, and no pacers; each lap’s time limit then decreases by two minutes per lap. The event is rain or shine; competitors should expect low-light conditions and bring a headlamp. A full-service aid station is available at the start/finish area and this is a cup-less event. Participants must be 19 or older. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
