The Cerne Giant

The Cerne Giant is a challenge event based at Cerne Abbas Village Hall, with routes across Dorset downland and river valleys. Entrants choose between two long-distance routes and must complete their route within an 11 hour time limit. The event starts and finishes at Cerne Abbas and passes through local landmarks including Alton Pancras, Lyscombe Chapel, the Dorsetshire Gap, Buckland Newton and Sydling St Nicholas. The longer route also visits Bingham's Melcombe.

Available distances:

  • 20 miles, two checkpoints
  • 30 miles, three checkpoints

Checkpoints offer drinks and light snacks. All finishers receive a certificate and a light vegetarian meal at the finish; participants with other dietary needs should carry their own food. Entrants must have their tally card scanned before starting. Disposable cups are not provided so participants should bring a personal mug. Dogs are not permitted.

Entries open on 1 November 2026 and close on 7 March 2027. Entry is limited to 180 places, not transferable, and will not be accepted on the day. Entry fees are shown separately for LDWA members and non members. Parking is limited and located about 600 m from the start; marshals will provide parking guidance and further route descriptions and GPX files are published by Dorset LDWA in advance.
