The Brutal Extreme Triathlons : Llanberis, North Wales
The Brutal Extreme Triathlons take place around Llyn Padarn and include a separate mountain section on Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) via the Llanberis Path. Events are offered as solo or relay teams and include multiple distances with laps that determine total swim, bike and run mileage.
Distances available:
- Canol (Half): swim 1.2 miles, bike 56 miles, lake run 5 miles plus mountain
- Mawr (Full): swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles, lake run 15 miles plus mountain
- Cawr (Double): ultra laps for double distance
- Goron (Triple): ultra laps for triple distance
The swim is held in Llyn Padarn with competitors completing laps and exiting every two laps. The bike uses a 28 mile open-road lap; the route includes steep climbs, notably over Pen y Pass, and fast descents back to race HQ. The lake lap run is about 5 miles per lap and contains trails, rocks and varied terrain. The mountain section follows the Llanberis Path and is roughly 9 miles up and down.
Support and safety details include mandatory support crew for double and triple entries, a mountain medic check before the climb, visible hi-viz vests to be worn on the bike at all times, and specified kit items such as waterproofs, whistle, map and a charged waterproofed phone.
