The Big Run 5K
The Big Run 5K is a cross-country running event held at the Ivey Redmon Sports Complex in Kernersville. The event takes place in early June to celebrate Global Running Day and features a cross-country course where participants can choose to run or walk.
The event offers several different participation options based on distance and expected finish times:
- 5K (Heat 1) - Designed for runners expecting to finish in under 30 minutes.
- 5K (Heat 2) - Intended for participants with an expected finish time of 25 minutes or more.
- 5K (Elite Heat) - Restricted to runners with qualifying times (under 18:00 for men and 20:00 for women) and requires race director approval.
- 1 Mile Fun Run - An untimed event for participants of various ages.
The 5K competition uses gun/clock timing for results rather than chip start times. Awards for the timed 5K events include top overall male and female winners, masters winners, and the top three finishers in various age categories ranging from 9 and under to 80 and over.
Participants who finish the race can visit a post-race expo. Race shirts are provided to a limited number of early registrants for both the 5K and the fun run. A portion of the proceeds from the event supports the Good Works Engine charity, which provides athletic footwear to local individuals in need and low-income schools.
