Big Mountain Run

The Big Mountain Run is an annual uphill run or hike to the summit of Big Mountain at Whitefish Mountain Resort in Whitefish, MT. The event for 2026 is scheduled for July 25 and starts at the base of Big Mountain in the Upper Village near the Danny On Trailhead. The course is 3.8 miles with about 2,200 feet of elevation gain to the summit.

Prizes and awards are given for race categories that include King and Queen of the Mountain, Prince and Princess for juniors 16 and under, Top Dog for the fastest leashed dog, oldest and youngest runners, and the Birthday Club. The Birthday Club awards a cupcake to men who finish in a time less than their age and to women who finish in a time equivalent to their age plus 10 minutes. Registrants receive awards, raffle opportunities, and snacks at the summit.

A free lift pass is provided for registrants to descend the mountain; dogs are not allowed on the lift. An awards ceremony is held on the deck of the Summit House after the race. Entry fees vary by age: early registration for ages 17 and older is $35 and day of race registration is $40; juniors 16 and under are $20 for early and day of registration. Proceeds support the Glacier Nordic Ski Team and a scholarship fund. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
