Tartarus Backyard Ultra
Tartarus Backyard Ultra is a last person standing event organized by Kaniksu Ultras at Camp 7, Riverside State Park in Spokane, WA. The event runs two parallel races: a running race and a rucking race. These are separate events; an entrant may compete in only one.
Competitors complete repeated trail loops. A new loop starts every hour and each participant must return to the start corral before the next loop begins. Runners who are not in the corral at the start may not continue. Participants may self-eliminate; those who do must immediately vacate the start area to allow remaining competitors room.
Course and loop details:
- 4.1667 mile loop for runners
- 2.2 mile loop for ruckers
At night the format moves to an out-and-back on the Centennial Trail, and daytime loops use local trails starting from the old airstrip at Camp 7. The final winner in each race is the last person able to complete one solo loop when all others have dropped out. There is also a Backyard 24 option where all participants who reach 24 hours are tied for first unless a sole runner continues to complete the full period.
Ruck requirements specify a core weight based on body weight and exclude food and water. Crews are permitted but not required. Portable toilets are located just after the start line. Camping near the site and small personal setups next to the start and finish are allowed. Race swag includes an event T shirt and an additional acknowledgment item.
