Tartarus Backyard Ultra takes place at Camp 7, Riverside State Park, in Spokane, Washington. The event runs two separate races: a running Backyard Ultra and a rucking Backyard Ultra. Each lap is 4.1667 miles for runners and 2.2 miles for ruckers, with a one-hour limit to complete.

The format is last person standing, with hourly starts until only one runner and one rucker remain. Runners must be in the corral when the bell rings and may not leave the course. Evening legs move to an out-and-back Centennial Trail course; camping, crew support, water, coffee, and Hammer Nutrition are provided.
