Tartarus Backyard Ultra
Tartarus Backyard Ultra is a last-person-standing endurance event held at Camp 7 in Riverside State Park near Spokane, WA. The event runs two separate races: a running race and a rucking race. Participants may enter only one of the two.
Races use a repeated loop format. Runners complete a daytime trail loop and ruckers complete a shorter loop. Each loop must be finished before the next hourly start; races begin on the hour and repeat each hour. In the evening the course moves to an out-and-back section on the Centennial Trail, and the loop course resumes the following morning.
Key race procedures include a whistle and countdown system before each hourly start, a bell that signals each lap start, and a requirement to be in the start corral when the next lap begins. Once the bell is rung, participants may not receive outside aid or visit crew, tents, or vehicles while on course; the only permitted leave is to use the portable toilets. Crews are allowed but not required. Portable toilets are located just after the start line.
Additional notes: the event provides an event T-shirt and an award for the winner. Camping is permitted near the start area. A Backyard 24 option ties all participants who complete 24 hours for first place. Ruck weight minimums apply based on body weight. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
