Tartarus Backyard Ultra
Tartarus Backyard Ultra is an endurance event at Camp 7 in Riverside State Park near Spokane, WA, organized by Kaniksu Ultras. The event uses the backyard ultra format where participants complete one loop per hour and the races continue until a single runner and a single rucker remain.
There are two separate races and competitors may enter only one:
- 4.1667 miles per lap for runners
- 2.2 miles per lap for ruckers
Each lap must be completed within the hour. Participants must be standing in the start corral when the next lap begins and may not start late. Once the lap period begins, runners may not receive aid or leave the course except to use portable toilets located nearby. A small area beside the start and finish line is available for a chair, cooler, and small personal gear, and nearby camping is permitted.
Ruck requirements set a core weight based on competitor body weight. Core weight does not include water, food, or other equipment. If a competitor weighs more than 150 pounds the core weight is 30 pounds; if under 150 pounds the core weight is 20 pounds. Traditional rucks are required and vests are not allowed.
A Backyard 24 option ties all participants who complete 24 hours for first place unless a sole competitor continues to complete the full course alone. The event date may be subject to change based on state park permitting. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
