Tartarus Backyard Ultra

Tartarus Backyard Ultra is a last-person-standing running and rucking event held at Camp 7, Riverside State Park in Spokane, WA. The event runs separate Run and Ruck races on repeated loop laps; participants may enter only one race.

Each lap must be completed within one hour. Races start on the hour and continue hour by hour until a single runner and a single rucker complete a final solo loop and are declared winners. At night the course shifts to an out-and-back on the Centennial Trail, and the trail loop resumes the following morning.

Distances:

  • 4.1667 mile laps for runners
  • 2.2 mile laps for ruckers

Race procedures include a whistle and bell sequence for the start, a corral requirement before each lap, and prohibitions on late starts and receiving aid after the bell. Participants must provide their own aid; crews are permitted but not required. Portable toilets are located just after the start line. There is a small area at the start/finish for a chair and personal gear, and camping is permitted nearby.

Ruck requirements specify a core weight of 30 pounds for participants over 150 pounds and 20 pounds for those under 150 pounds; vests are not allowed and traditional rucks must be used. The event includes event T-shirt swag and fundraising options for entry. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
