Tartarus Backyard Ultra

Tartarus Backyard Ultra is held at Camp 7, Riverside State Park near Spokane, WA. The event runs two separate competitions: a running race and a rucking race. The 2026 edition is designated a silver ticket event.

The format follows the backyard ultra model: participants run or ruck a loop each hour until only one finisher remains in each division. Each loop must be completed within one hour and another start begins on the hour. Race starts are signaled by whistles, an RD countdown, and a bell; no late starts are allowed once the bell rings. Runners and ruckers must be standing in the start corral at the next start to continue.

Distances:

  • 4.1667 mile loop for runners
  • 2.2 mile loop for ruckers

Once the bell rings participants must stay on course; the only permitted exit is to use portable toilets located near the start/finish. Participants provide their own aid; crews are permitted but not required. A small area next to the start/finish is available for a chair, cooler, and small personal gear. Camping is permitted nearby. Any participant who does not continue must vacate the start/finish area but may remain to watch.

Backyard 24 rules note that everyone who reaches 24 hours is tied for first unless a sole runner completes the solo 24-hour loop. Ruck core-weight rules set minimums based on body weight and require traditional rucks; core weight does not include food or water. Fundraising may be used in lieu of a registration fee if a minimum amount is raised. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
