Tartarus Backyard Ultra, Camp 7, Riverside State Park, Spokane, WA
Tartarus Backyard Ultra is a last person standing event held at Camp 7 in Riverside State Park. The event runs two separate competitions: a running race and a rucking race. Each discipline uses a looped course that is repeated every hour; participants have one hour to complete each loop.
Distances:
- Run: 4.1667 mile laps
- Ruck: 2.2 mile laps
Races follow the backyard ultra format. Runners and ruckers must be standing in the start corral when the next lap begins; late starts are not allowed. Once the start bell rings, participants may not leave the course for crew contact or aid, with the exception of using portable toilets. Portable toilets are located just after the start line. A small area next to the start and finish is available for a chair, cooler, and small personal gear. Camping is permitted nearby.
If a participant stops before the end, they are considered a Did Not Finish and must vacate the start/finish area to allow remaining participants to move closer. The event includes a Backyard 24 option where everyone who reaches 24 hours is tied for first unless a single participant completes the full distance alone.
Rucking requires a core weight based on body weight: over 150 pounds core weight 30 pounds, under 150 pounds core weight 20 pounds. No vests allowed; traditional rucks only. Core weight excludes water, food, and other consumables.
The event offers an event T shirt and an award for the winner. Race date is subject to change based on State Parks permitting. Fundraising may be used in lieu of registration if a specified minimum is raised. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
