Tartarus Backyard Ultra
Tartarus Backyard Ultra is scheduled for August 15, 2026, at Camp 7 in Riverside State Park. It follows the backyard ultra format: runners and ruckers run repeated loops and the event continues until only one runner and one rucker remain.
There are two separate races: a running race and a rucking race. Each race uses a daytime loop on local trails. Loop distances are:
- 4.1667 miles for runners
- 2.25 miles for ruckers
Each participant has exactly one hour to complete a loop. Another lap begins on the hour, and participants must be standing in the start corral when the next lap begins to continue. No late starts are permitted once the bell rings. After the bell, participants must stay on course except to use portable toilets. Runners and ruckers provide their own aid; crews are permitted but not required.
At night the course moves to an out-and-back on the Centennial Trail and returns to the loop the following morning. If only one person remains in a category, that person must complete one final solo loop to be declared the winner. Participants who do not finish must vacate the start/finish area but are encouraged to remain and support others.
Event facilities include a small area next to the start/finish for personal gear, nearby camping, portable toilets just after the start line, water, coffee, and Hammer Nutrition. Fundraising can replace the registration fee if a minimum amount is raised; the event board has set a fundraising goal of $3,000. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
