Tartarus Backyard Ultra is a backyard-style endurance event held at Camp 7 in Riverside State Park, Spokane, WA. The event includes separate running and rucking races; participants may enter only one. Race swag includes an event T-shirt and an additional acknowledgment. The event winner will receive an award.
Distances:
- 4.1667 miles per lap (running)
- 2.2 miles per lap (rucking)
Format and rules
The event follows a last-person-standing backyard format. Races begin on the hour and repeat every hour. At night the course moves to an out-and-back on the Centennial Trail; the loop course resumes the next morning. Each lap must be completed within the hour and runners or ruckers must be standing in the start corral when the next lap begins. No late starts are allowed and participants who leave the corral at the lap start may not continue. After the lap start signal, participants may not receive aid from others or visit crew or vehicles; the only permitted reason to leave the course once a lap starts is to use the portable toilets. Crews are allowed but participants must provide their own aid. There is space next to the start/finish for a chair or small gear and nearby camping is permitted. DNF participants must vacate the start/finish area. Backyard 24 rules: everyone who reaches 24 hours is tied for first; a sole remaining participant may continue to finish 24 hours. Ruck core weight: over 150 lb = 30 lb, under 150 lb = 20 lb; no vests, traditional rucks only. Fundraising option available with a $100 minimum to waive the registration fee.
