St. Croix 40 Winter Ultra : January 9-10, 2027
The St. Croix 40 Winter Ultra is a winter survivalist race held fully within St. Croix State Park near Hinckley, Minnesota. Participants travel roughly 40 miles on foot, ski, or fat bike while carrying all essential survival gear and moving through a cold night. The course uses groomed snowmobile trails and is subject to trail conditions based on snowfall and temperature.
The event includes on-course gear skill checks. At the start competitors must begin in a sleeping bag and bivy sack, pack up all gear at the starting signal, and begin moving. At the midway checkpoint competitors must boil 12 ounces of water using a provided water supply and a stove kit. The midpoint aid station is outdoors and offers water only; its facilities include a very cold vault toilet. The Race HQ is at the park Trail Center, a heated building with bathrooms and showers that serves as the location for gear check, pre-race meetings, and the finish line breakfast.
