St. Croix 40 Winter Ultra

The St. Croix 40 Winter Ultra takes place January 9-10, 2027 in St. Croix State Park, Minnesota. It is a winter survivalist race in the same spirit as the Arrowhead 135 and Tuscobia 160. Participants travel roughly 40 miles on foot, ski, or fat bike, carrying all essential survival gear and moving through a cold Minnesota night.

The race includes two on-course skill tests where competitors must demonstrate the practical use of their survival equipment. These skill tests are integrated into the course and are intended to assess competence with required gear. The event information indicates that foot, ski, and fat bike are accepted modes of travel over the course distance. Required gear, race rules, a race FAQ, and past results are provided as part of the event details.

The format emphasizes self-sufficiency: participants are expected to carry necessary supplies and operate independently during the overnight portion of the course. The event is presented as a shorter course survival challenge intended to build experience for longer winter expeditions and races. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
