Spitfire Ultra Trail Challenge
Spitfire Ultra Trail Challenge is a trail running event on North Menan Butte in Menan, Idaho. The course uses volcanic terrain, including caldera floor and rim sections, and offers sweeping views of the Teton range and the Snake River. The event takes place each year on the third Saturday of April; in 2027 the weekend date is April 17.
Routes range from short to long and are routed on rugged volcanic trails. Longer options traverse both of the volcanic cones referenced by the event and include sections that cover the entire North Volcano trail. The course descriptions note a mix of surfaces that can include dirt, mud, sand, and exposed rock, along with climbing and descending segments.
Available distances:
- 5k: short rim and caldera loop
- 12k: mid-length trail route
- 30k: extended cross-volcano challenge
- 55k: full ultra distance across both volcanoes
The event is part of the Idaho Trail & Ultra Series. That series comprises 11 races across Idaho; completing four of the series races at any ultra distance (31 miles or more) qualifies a participant for a series jacket. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
