Spitfire Ultra Trail Challenge

The Spitfire Ultra Trail Challenge is an annual trail running event held on the rugged volcanic terrain of the North Menan Butte in Menan, Idaho. The race utilizes the unique geography of two dormant tuff volcanoes, offering participants the opportunity to run along the crater rims and down into the calderas. The course features diverse underfoot conditions, including dirt, mud, sand, and slick rock.

Participants can choose from four distinct race distances:

• 5k
• 12k
• 30k
• 55k

The 5k course takes runners to the rim and through a single caldera before returning to the basecamp. Those opting for the 12k route cover the entire trail system of the North Volcano. The 30k and 55k distances are more extensive, with both courses crossing onto two separate volcanoes. The 55k ultra distance follows this circuit twice, providing multiple views of the surrounding landscape, including the Teton Mountains and the Snake River.

The event is part of the Idaho Trail & Ultra Series (ITUS). Runners who participate in the 55k distance can earn credit toward the series requirements. Basecamp facilities include food and massage tables for participants after they complete their respective distances. The event is open to both runners and walkers.
