Dizzy Horse Backyard Ultra

The Dizzy Horse Backyard Ultra is a winter endurance event held at the Bonneville County Exhibition Hall and Sandy Downs Park in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Following the backyard ultra format, participants must run a loop of 4.167 miles every hour on the hour. The event continues until only one runner remains. This person is declared the "Last Horse Standing" and must complete one final solo loop to win. All other participants receive a custom DNF award.

The course features varied terrain consisting of approximately 25% grass, 20% horse racetrack, 35% dirt, 8% sand, and 12% pavement. In January conditions, the surface may be entirely covered in snow. The route is mostly flat, with the exception of a 35-foot vertical climb in the sandy section along a canal. A bell signals three, two, and one minute before the start of each hour. Runners must be in the starting corral when the hour begins to remain in the race.

Participants can choose between two primary registration levels:

  • Bareback: Includes access to a general indoor transition area with water and bathrooms. This level does not include aid station food.
  • Thoroughbred: Includes a deluxe aid station with catered food, a reserved indoor transition area, and a custom hoodie.

Individual upgrades such as reserved interior spaces, bib belts, and deluxe aid station access for crew members are also available. The indoor facilities provide a place for runners and crew to transition between laps. While active on a loop, runners may not receive outside assistance from crew members.
