The South Downs 50 km is a point-to-point trail race from Falmer to Eastbourne, held on the South Downs Way through the South Downs National Park. The route finishes over the white cliffs of Beachy Head. The race includes about 3,500 feet of ascent and descent and is largely runnable terrain, listed as 99% trail and 1% road. The minimum age to enter is 20 and no qualifier is required.
Course and logistics
The race starts at the University of Brighton, Falmer and finishes at Helen Garden, Eastbourne. The route uses grass trails, some farm tracks and forest paths and is fully waymarked. There are four aid stations along the course. The event provides live GPS tracking and chip timing, first aid and medical cover, event insurance, and a free shuttle bus from the finish to local hotels and Eastbourne train station. The entry price is listed as £78.00 and includes a mandatory GPS tracker. Participants receive a bespoke finisher medal, and there are trophies and prizes for winners and vet categories. The race awards 2 ITRA points and is a UTMB Index race.
Entries and policies
Entries are on a first-come, first-served basis with no waitlist and will close one week before the race or when limits are reached. Refunds are available at 50% up until 2 March 2026; after that refunds are not given except in cases of pregnancy. Deferral and transfer options are available with conditions and possible fees.
