Soapstone Assault : Somers, CT
The Soapstone Assault is a trail race organized by the Shenipsit Striders at Soapstone Mountain in Somers, Connecticut. The course is described as a loop of approximately 5.5 miles that includes six separate ascents of the mountain and finishes at the base of the fire tower after the final climb known as Killer Hill.
Runners circumnavigate the mountain in a counterclockwise direction. Each time a trail heading upward is encountered, participants run to the peak and return down the same trail before resuming the circuit. The first two climbs end at the fire tower and do not have aid station access. A cupless water stop is accessible from climbs three, four, and five. The start line is at the trailhead sign just before the blue‑blazed trail entrance.
The course contains steep, rocky, slippery, and otherwise treacherous sections. Although past injuries have generally been minor, a serious injury is possible and some parts of the course are relatively inaccessible, so emergency response could be delayed. The event is not recommended for novice runners.
Online registration is required and there will be no race‑day registration. Paid Shenipsit Striders members receive a discount code for registration. The race is capped at 50 runners to address parking and safety concerns; carpooling is strongly encouraged and participants must follow parking instructions from volunteers. Breakfast sandwiches will be available near the aid station after the race. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
