Soapstone Assault : Somers, CT

Soapstone Assault is a trail race organized by the Shenipsit Striders at Soapstone Mountain in Somers, Connecticut. The course is 5.5 miles long and includes six separate ascents of the mountain, with roughly 1,500 feet of total climbing. Runners circumnavigate the base of the mountain in a counterclockwise loop and take each uphill trail to the peak before returning down the same trail to continue the circuit. The final climb is up a steep powerline trail referred to as Killer Hill, with the finish located at the base of the fire tower.

The route contains steep, rocky, slippery, and otherwise treacherous sections. Parts of the course are relatively inaccessible, and emergency response could be delayed; a serious injury is possible. The first two climbs end at the fire tower and do not have aid station access. A cupless water stop is accessible from climbs three, four, and five. Breakfast sandwiches will be available after the race near the aid station.

Online registration is required and the field is capped at 50 runners. There will be no race-day registration. Organizers note public safety concerns about parking, ask that attendees follow volunteer directions, and strongly encourage carpooling. The event is presented by the Shenipsit Striders, a nonprofit trail running club that supports Connecticut trail stewardship and land use programs.
