Northern Nipmuck Trail Race - Union, CT
The Northern Nipmuck Trail Race is a trail event organized by the Shenipsit Striders in Union, Connecticut. The race is listed as a 16 Miler along the Nipmuck Trail and has a registration opening date of January 1, 2027. Awards and swag are not provided.
Parking is at Bigelow Hollow State Park and the race start is located just across the road from the park. Parking capacity limits the field; there is no race day registration and entrants are encouraged to join the waitlist, as waitlisted runners are likely to be added. Up to three days before the event entrants can defer their entry fee, excluding the UltraSignup fee, to a future Shenipsit Striders event.
The course begins across from Bigelow Hollow and heads south on the Nipmuck Trail through the Yale-Myers Forest. At roughly 4 miles the trail crosses Barlow Mill Road at Two Pipes, then continues about 4 miles to the turnaround at Boston Hollow, also known as Alpacaville at the northern end of the Nipmuck Marathon, before returning on the same route. The advertised distance is 16 miles but the actual distance may be slightly shorter due to terrain and elevation. Minimal aid will be provided at Two Pipes and Boston Hollow, and the trail is blazed blue with additional flagging at some tricky spots. Runners are responsible for navigating the course.
The race was discontinued after 2012 and revived in 2022. Net proceeds from the event support local trail stewardship and land use organizations, including projects such as a bridge at the north end of Breakneck Pond funded mainly by 2022 proceeds.
