Northern Nipmuck Trail Race
The Northern Nipmuck Trail Race is scheduled for March 28, 2027 in Union, CT and is organized by the Shenipsit Striders. The event is presented as an out and back of approximately 16 miles, starting across the road from Bigelow Hollow State Park and running south on the Nipmuck Trail through the Yale-Myers Forest to a turnaround at Boston Hollow. The advertised distance is 16 miles but the course may measure a little less because of technical terrain and elevation.
Minimal aid will be provided at locations near Two Pipes, Boston Hollow, and another midcourse point (approximately miles 4, 8, and 12). The route is blazed blue for its entirety and will have flagging at a few tricky spots; competitors are expected to navigate the course. There is no race day registration and parking at Bigelow Hollow State Park is the primary limiting factor, so a waitlist is used when the field fills.
The race began in 2010, was discontinued in 2012, and was revived in 2022 with an effort to maintain the earlier event character. After covering minor costs, proceeds are directed to organizations that support local trail stewardship. Awards and event swag are not provided.
