Snowy Owl 10 Mile - York River State Park
The Snowy Owl is a trail race held at York River State Park in Williamsburg, VA. The distance is 10 MILE. The course has about 600 feet of elevation gain. The route includes approximately five miles of technical single track, about 0.75 mile on paved road, and the remainder on dirt fire roads. Packet pickup is held on race morning only. The event has a 4 hour cutoff. The organizer may move the date in case of dangerous weather. The race benefits AWARE (Alliance of Wild Animal Rehabilitators and Educators); representatives from AWARE will be onsite with owls and educational information.
Course layout and services
The course terrain is described in segments: 0-1.5 mile fire road dirt trail (Woodstock Pond/Backbone); 1.5-3.5 mile single track (Marl Ravine); 3.5-4.5 mile fire road dirt trail (Backbone/Powhatan Forks East); 4.5-6 mile single track (John Blair Trail C); 6-7.5 mile fire road dirt trail (Majestic Oak); 7.5-8.5 mile single track (John Blair Trail A); 8.5-9.25 mile fire road dirt trail (Pamunkey/Backbone); 9.25-10 mile paved downhill (entry road to finish at playground picnic shelter). There are three aid stations providing water and light snacks; the finish area will offer hot coffee, cocoa and snacks. Awards are given to overall top three and top three in 10-year age groups for male and female finishers. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
