Slough and Steady - Course and event details

Slough and Steady takes place near Perry Lake in Ozawkie, KS with start and finish at Apple Valley. The event offers multiple distances:

• 100K
• 50K
• 25K

The Perry Lake trail for this event is divided into five sections. The 50k loop accumulates about 3,300 feet of elevation gain. The course is marked with blue paint on trees and posts; reflective blue arrows appear occasionally and double blue marks indicate a distinct right or left turn. Markings should be discernible in December.

Section 1 leaves Apple Valley and heads north through Longview Park, along woodlands and Lake Perry, and includes several high bluffs. There is an unmanned water drop about 4.7 miles into this section and, 3.5 miles after that, the Old Military Trail trailhead hosts the first manned aid station. This aid station is the turnaround for the 25k; 25k runners check in and return to Apple Valley. Bald eagles may be visible in this area.

Section 2 runs 3.5 miles northeast near Little Slough Creek to Kiowa Road, crossing Ferguson Road and a short gravel stretch at 94th street. Section 3 covers Kiowa Road and 82nd street for about 3.6 miles, with a manned aid at the old Lowry school roughly 1.7 miles down Kiowa and a possibly muddy 82nd street segment.

Section 4 is a 4.7 mile remote trail through timber, drainage areas, and fields, leading to the Slough Creek boat ramp aid station and then about 4.6 miles to the Slough Creek campground aid station. Section 5 runs roughly 6 miles north from the campground back to Apple Valley, featuring gentle slopes, open fields, woodlands, lake views, and a creek crossing that may involve wet feet depending on conditions.
