Slough and Steady

Slough and Steady is a trail event at Perry Lake with start and finish at Apple Valley in Ozawkie, KS. The event offers multiple distances:

  • 125 Mile
  • 100K
  • 50K
  • 25K

The Perry Lake trail course is divided into five sections. The 50K loop includes about 3,300 feet of elevation gain. Trails are marked with blue paint on trees and posts; reflective blue arrows may appear and a double blue mark indicates a distinct right or left turn.

The first section leaves Apple Valley, passes through Longview Park, skirts Lake Perry and includes several high bluffs. An unmanned water drop is located 4.7 miles into this section. About 3.5 miles after that is the Old Military Trail trailhead manned aid station, which serves as the turnaround for the 25K course. Bald eagles can sometimes be seen from this section.

The second section runs northeast along Little Slough Creek to Kiowa Road and includes a short gravel road crossing. The third section follows Kiowa Road and 82nd street with runnable gravel and a manned aid station near the old Lowry school building; portions of 82nd street can be muddy. The fourth section is remote with timber, drainage areas and field crossings, and reaches a manned aid station at the Slough Creek boat ramp and later at the Slough Creek campground. The fifth section returns north to Apple Valley with mostly gentle slopes, fields, woodlands and a creek crossing that may cause wet feet depending on conditions.

Road crossings such as Ferguson Road require attention to traffic. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
