The Lamplighter 40 is an all-night trail running ultra situated in the North York Moors. The event follows a circular route that begins and ends at Goathland Village Hall. Participants travel through a variety of terrain including open moorland, forestry, and established tracks, visiting landmarks such as triangulation pillars, cairns, and crosses along the way.

The event is designed to span from sunset to sunrise, with a total duration of approximately 12 hours. Runners can participate as solo entrants or in pairs. For safety and navigation, every participant is provided with a tracker, a GPX file, and a master map of the route. Mandatory kit requirements include a map of the North York Moors, a compass, head-torch with spare batteries, an emergency bivvy bag, and waterproof clothing.

There are three checkpoint locations along the course providing refreshments such as water, soft drinks, and snacks. One of these is an indoor station that serves hot food, including pizza. Upon returning to the finish, runners are provided with hot food, including vegetarian and gluten-free options.

Participants may enter under the following categories:

  • Solo
  • Pair

All finishers receive a medal. Additional recognition is provided for the first female and first male finishers. Following the event, runners have the option to rest at the village hall before traveling home.
