Signpost Challenge Hike
The Signpost Challenge Hike is a hilly endurance event based in the High Peak region, starting and finishing at the Marple Senior Citizen's Hall in Marple Memorial Park. Organised by the South Manchester LDWA, the event marks its third year with routes heading north and east through varied terrain and areas of industrial heritage. Participants navigate a course that includes elevations and views over Manchester, the South Pennines, and the Peak District.
The event offers two distinct distances:
- 24 miles (38.6 km) with 4,300 feet of ascent.
- 17 miles (27.3 km) with 3,000 feet of ascent.
The long route passes over Werneth Low, Cown Edge, Lantern Pike, and Chinley Churn, crossing the Millennium walkway in New Mills. The short route also visits hilly landmarks before both return via the Goyt Valley Way. A specific feature of the event is the challenge to identify green PNFS footpath signs along the course.
Four checkpoints are provided on each route, consisting of three outdoor stations and one indoor station. The 24-mile route utilizes a Scout Hut in Hayfield as the indoor checkpoint, while the 17-mile route uses the Children's Inn at Rowarth. Drinks and snacks are available at these points, and participants must carry their own mug. The entry fee includes refreshments at the start, snacks at checkpoints, and a hot meal at the finish. All participants who complete the course within the 10-hour limit receive a certificate.
Public parking is available at Chadwick Street and Hollins Lane. Dogs are not permitted at this event. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
