Shorefire Trail Races - Smith Mountain Lake State Park
Shorefire features two trail races that start and finish at the covered Beach Pavilion inside Smith Mountain Lake State Park. Both courses use a mix of maintained doubletrack and native forest trails with multiple shoreline viewpoints and picnic and spectator areas nearby.
Distances
- 25K (15.9 Miles)
- 10K (6.7 Miles)
The 25K is mostly nontechnical with rolling hills and approximately 1,800 feet of elevation gain. The early section follows a short road and wide doubletrack, then continues through lollipop sections and multiple connectors. The route is marked with blue flagging and directional arrows; a GPX file will be available. Aid stations include unmanned water stops at mile 3.5 and mile 15 and staffed stops offering water, Tailwind, fruit, PB&J and snacks at other points.
The 10K includes about 700 feet of elevation gain and one short technical descent early on, then opens to flat runnable doubletrack. The course passes behind the Visitor Center, links to Five Oaks Trail for a roughly 3-mile loop, and returns the same way. The 10K is marked with pink flagging and has an unmanned water stop and a shared Five Oaks aid station.
Bathrooms are available at the Beach Pavilion, the Playground area, the Discovery Center and the Visitor Center. Park entry is included with race registration; annual state park passes do not change this arrangement. Volunteers will staff key junctions.
