Shorefire Trail Races

Shorefire Trail Races take place at Smith Mountain Lake State Park and offer two trail distances that both start and finish at the covered Beach Pavilion. Parking, restrooms, and spectator areas are available near the pavilion, and park entry is included with race registration.

  • Shorefire 25K: 15.9 Miles
  • Shorefire 10K: 6.7 Miles

The 25K follows mainly nontechnical doubletrack with rolling hills and about 1,800 feet of elevation gain based on barometric recordings. The route includes several connectors and a few lollipop sections, is marked with blue flagging and directional arrows, and a GPX file will be provided for GPS users. Aid stations are positioned roughly at mile 3.5 (unmanned water), mile 4.85 (Campfire Amphitheater with lake views), mile 10 (campground), mile 12 (Five Oaks Trail loop), and mile 15 (unmanned water). Most turns tend to be right turns and the lake is often on the right.

The 10K includes about 700 feet of elevation gain. Its early descent on Walton Creek Trail contains the only technical section; after that the course opens to runnable doubletrack and a three mile lollipop loop. The 10K is marked with pink flagging and has aid at mile 2.75 plus unmanned water stops near the Visitor Center parking lot.

Bathrooms are available at multiple park locations. The event follows Trail Sisters Approved standards and lists Friends of Smith Mountain Lake State Park as the charity partner. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
