Mountain Running in the Derryveagh Mountains
The Seven Sisters Skyline is a mountain running event held in the Derryveagh Mountains of County Donegal. The course traverses the dramatic spine of the Seven Sisters, stretching between the peaks of Errigal and Muckish. The event is part of the Skyrunning UK & Ireland Series and has previously been included in the World Mountain Running World Cup.
Participants can choose from three distinct distances:
- 55 km: A route featuring over 4,000 m of vertical gain, including the summits of six peaks such as Mackoght, Aghla Mór, and Muckish.
- 30 km: A point-to-point traverse from Muckish toward Errigal with 2,100 m of elevation gain.
- 16 km: A course starting at Altan Track that visits Altan Castle before joining the mountain route, with 800 m of ascent.
The terrain consists of technical trails, rocky summits, razor-sharp ridges, and steep climbs. The 55 km and 30 km distances are recognized as UTMB Index races, allowing runners to collect points for the UTMB World Series. The 55 km event also hosts the National Series Skyrunning Championships. The event features a prize purse for top finishers in the longer distances.
