Scarr
Event details
Scarr is an IMRA mountain race in County Wicklow on Wednesday 3rd June 2026. The main course is 8.60 km with 400 m of climb and there is a 5.00 km short course. The event is graded 7 (3,2,2) for difficult terrain, 200 m-500 m ascent and 6 km-10 km distance. The route is fully marked and GPS use is allowed. The race is part of the Leinster League and includes a junior course that forms part of the 2025 Junior League.
Route and requirements
The route starts on a fire road where the Wicklow Way turns at the top of Gaffney's Lane. It rises gradually with forestry on the right, then a steep, varied 1 km climb that gains about 200 m (about 20% gradient) on single track through bracken and heather to the Scarr ridge. The course follows the wall clockwise around Scarr; runners should watch for some wire on the ground alongside the wall. A marshall directs the main field onto the final ascent to the summit, followed by a descent along the ridge to the Wicklow Way and past Brusher Gap Hut to the finish.
All runners must carry Level B kit: waterproof jacket, hat or buff, gloves, whistle, charged mobile with emergency number, and a foil blanket or bivvy bag. Sign in, collect race number and have the timing chip scanned before the race. Race numbers must be visible on the front of the chest. If a runner cannot finish, they should inform a volunteer. Prizegiving will be at Kavanagh's Vartry House, Roundwood, Co. Wicklow. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
