Event Overview
The Saturn 7 Hour Time Challenge - Gilesgate is a flexible trail running event located in Durham. Participants have a seven-hour window to complete their chosen distance along a scenic route by the River Wear, offering views of the Cathedral. The course is fully signed and requires no prior navigational experience. This inclusive event welcomes runners of all abilities as well as walkers.
Distance and Format
The event uses a lap-based system, allowing participants to control their total distance. A standard lap is 7 km (4.37 miles), though this may be adjusted to a 5.28 km (3.28 mile) loop depending on the trail conditions. Various distances can be achieved:
- 3 km minimum to be recognized as an official finisher
- 21.1 km (Half Marathon) completed in three laps
- 42.2 km (Marathon) completed in six laps
- 50 km or Ultra distances for those completing seven or more laps
Specific turn points at 3 km and 5 km are integrated into the lap to ensure younger participants can comply with age-based distance regulations.
Facilities and Support
An aid station is positioned at the start and finish area of each lap, providing a selection of sweet and savoury snacks, including vegan options. The race headquarters at the Durham Amateur Rowing Club provides toilets and changing facilities. An unstaffed area is available for bag storage.
Participant Information
Finshers receive a themed medal for completing at least 3 km. Those reaching milestones such as a half marathon, marathon, or ultra distance are eligible for specific distance pins to attach to their medal ribbon.
