The Red Moshannon Downriver Race is a paddling race held on a 7.5-mile section of Moshannon Creek in central Pennsylvania. The course runs between Peale Bridge near Grassflat, PA and the Route 53 Bridge near Moshannon, PA. Distances offered include:
- 7.5 miles - Solo
- 7.5 miles - Team
At moderate flows this section of creek is rated Class II+ on the International Scale of Difficulty. High water can significantly increase difficulty. The water and air temperatures are usually very cold. Extra flotation in boats is highly recommended. There will be an awards banquet at Saint Severin social hall in Drifting, PA; a hot meal will be available for purchase and additional vehicle parking is provided there. No day-of-event race entries are allowed. All racers must register by March 14th.
Rules and safety
Life jackets that are U.S. Coast Guard Approved Type I, III, or V are required and must be worn properly; automatic or manual-inflating life jackets are not allowed. Helmets are required for kayaks, decked canoes, and SUPs; helmets are encouraged for open canoes and inflatables. Rudders and skegs are prohibited on all boats. SUP racers must paddle from a standing position; active paddling while kneeling or sitting is restricted and may lead to disqualification. The minimum age for solo kayak or canoe paddlers is 16 years unless entered in an approved Youth class. Organizers may cancel or postpone the race if the Rt. 53 bridge gage is projected above four feet. Race officials’ decisions are final.
