Quiet Silence : Lake Mills, WI
Quiet Silence is a night running event near Lake Mills, Wisconsin, held on a wide, flat crushed limestone rails to trails. The course is out and back with very little technical terrain. Two distances are offered:
- 16 mile out and back
- 31 mile out and back
The event takes place in late evening conditions as daylight has ended. Weather and surface conditions can vary from clear and mild to snowy. The trail is multi use and is not plowed or cleared for the event; sections may be open, drifted, or soft with post holing.
Aid and support differ by distance. The 16 mile route has an aid point at the turnaround with water, an electrolyte drink, and light snacks; a drop bag can be left and will be returned to the start and finish area, though exact timing is not guaranteed. The 31 mile route uses the same turnaround and also features a full aid station with cold and hot drinks, food, a covered lit tent, chairs, heaters, and volunteers. Portable toilets are at the start and at the 31 mile turnaround; there is no toilet at the 16 mile turnaround.
The event name reflects an emphasis on low outdoor noise and consideration for the local area. No external noise makers are allowed. Organizers will not provide alcohol or disposable cups; aid stations operate cupless.
Required gear follows local safety guidelines and is checked at packet pickup: two rear facing red lights and one forward facing red light with a blinking option, plus at least ten square inches of reflective material on both the front and back of outer layers. Finishers receive a token rather than a medal, and the top three men and top three women in each distance receive an additional gift. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
