Event overview
The Purbeck Hill Challenge 2026 is a one-day long-distance walk/run starting and finishing at Knoll Beach, Studland on the Isle of Purbeck. The event uses public rights of way to reach a series of checkpoints and includes at least one detailed orienteering section on a finer-scale map. Competitors may enter solo or as a pair. The event is self-supported; participants must carry mandatory safety equipment (likely waterproof clothing, compass, whistle, head torch, phone and cash). Entries are limited to 100 people and entries close on 13 February. Competitors have a maximum of seven hours to complete their chosen course.
Courses, maps and facilities
There are four course lengths, each offered with two technical options (Technically Easy or Technically Advanced). All course combinations can be run solo or as a pair.
- Super Short: 15 km, 170 m climb
- Short: 21 km, 400 m climb
- Medium: 33 km, 660 m climb
- Long: 41 km, 930 m climb
Maps are A2, double-sided and laminated: one side OS 1:25,000 and the other side detailed orienteering maps (1:10,000 or 1:7,500). An all-control map and a loose control description sheet are issued at registration. SPORTident dibbers are used to record controls; dibber hire is available for £1. The event centre is at the National Trust facilities at Knoll Beach. The competition area covers the Purbeck Hills and the Jurassic Coast, including heathland and coastal dune; terrain may be very wet and muddy at this time of year and grip-appropriate footwear is recommended.
