Over The Hill Track Club High Desert Ultra
The Over The Hill Track Club organizes an annual ultramarathon in Ridgecrest, California, with proceeds used to benefit local organizations. The club was first organized in 1973 and the High Desert Ultra began in 1986. The event is held at Cerro Coso Community College.
Distances offered include:
- 50K
- 30K
- 10K
All distances start and finish in the Cerro Coso Community College gym parking lot. Bathrooms and showers in the gym are available for participant use from 5:00 AM to 5:00 PM. A grassy area with shade and picnic tables across the road provides space for families.
The 30K and 50K are loop courses on rolling desert terrain over dirt roads, with elevation ranging from 2400 ft to 3500 ft. Temperatures on race day can vary widely, so layers are recommended. Nine aid stations are supplied with water, Skratch, cookies, and similar items; participants are advised to carry a water bottle between stations. Ibuprofen is not provided.
All finishers receive a handmade ceramic medal. Awards include first overall male and female by distance, age group awards three deep for the 30K and 50K across standard age divisions, and a military division award for top male and female military finishers in the 30K and 50K who are not receiving overall or age group awards. Runners with five or ten event finishes receive a sweatshirt or a Patagonia pullover respectively. Shirts are long sleeve technical shirts available in unisex or ladies cut and are guaranteed only if paid entry is received by November 1, 2025.
Bib and shirt pickup is offered at the California Welcome Center at 880 N. China Lake Boulevard and also at the start area on race morning. Camping is not permitted on college property; camping is available on nearby BLM land. The event lists a local hotel as host lodging. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
