About the race
The OTT Trail Marathon and 10 mile race take place at Parkwood Dolygaer in Merthyr Tydfil, within the Brecon Beacons. The marathon is a looped mountain course that starts and finishes at Parkwood and passes notable terrain including Pen Y Fan from Graig Fan Ddu, Fan Y Big, Talybont Reservoir and Tor y Foel.
Distances:
- 26.2 (ish) miles marathon loop.
- 10 miles out-and-back variant leaving the marathon route at Checkpoint 1.
The marathon has three checkpoints at approximately 7 miles, 14.5 miles and 20.5 miles. There is a cutoff at Checkpoint 3 (20.5 miles) set at six hours after the start; this equates to a required pace of about 20 minutes per mile or quicker. The 10 mile race checks in at the 7 mile point before following forestry tracks back to the finish.
Compulsory kit for the marathon includes a reusable cup, a charged mobile phone, minimum 1 litre hydration, foil blanket or bivi bag, 400 kcal emergency rations, a basic first aid kit, head torch, compass, whistle, waterproof jacket and trousers with taped seams, warm layers, hat, gloves and a rucksack. Compulsory kit for the 10 mile race includes a reusable cup, first aid kit, bivvy or foil blanket, 500 ml water and a waterproof jacket.
