Celtic Trail Races
The Celtic Trail Races are winter trail events based at Dare Valley Country Park near Aberdare, Rhondda Cynon Taff. Routes run through Afan Forest, the Rhigos mountain range and the Coed Morgannwg Way, finishing at Dare Valley Country Park. Terrain includes sharp climbs, long flowing descents, river crossings and remote single track across trails described as runnable and steeped in local history.
Race distances
- Celtic Ultra : 34 miles, 5,850 ft ascent, circular from Dare Valley Park
- Celtic Trail Marathon : 26 miles, 4,200 ft ascent, circular from Dare Valley Park
- Celtic Trail Half Marathon : 13 miles, 2,200 ft ascent, linear from Resolven to Dare Valley Park
Routes are fully marked with arrows, flags and tape and maps are provided. An interactive map and GPX files are available for download. Checkpoints are manned and number seven for the Ultra, six for the Marathon and three for the Half; they offer water, fruit and packaged snacks.
Practical details include separate car parking locations depending on distance and optional coach transport for the linear half marathon at an additional cost. Coach places may be limited and a small 10 litre finish bag can be transported for coach users. A compulsory kit list must be carried by all competitors. Event entry includes a finishers medal, free photographs, on-course safety and first aid provision, and refreshments at checkpoints. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
