The Nail the Rail 9 Miler/5 Miler takes place in Martinsville, Virginia on Saturday, February 28, 2026. Course and competition

Both races are out-and-back on the Dick & Willie Passage. The 9 mile course starts at trail milepost 0, goes to milepost 4.5, then returns to milepost 0. The 5 mile course uses a turnaround at trail milepost 2.5. Runners who complete the 9 mile course in 60 minutes or less meet the Nail the Rail standard. Age-adjusted targets based on USATF age grading are used for older age groups beginning at age 40. Participants who meet those standards receive a Golden Railroad Spike in addition to traditional overall and age-group awards.

Entry fees listed are $40 for the 9 Miler, $35 for the 5 Miler, and $40 for the virtual event. The event notes a price increase after January 31, 2026.
