Mullaghcarn Giant

The Mullaghcarn Giant is a mountain running event held in County Tyrone. Organized by Carmen Runners, the race forms part of the IMRA Ulster Championships and the NIMRA League. The event takes place on a course that covers a total distance of 12 km.

The route involves a total ascent of 500 meters. Participants summit Mullaghcarn, which stands at 542 meters and is the most southerly peak of the Sperrins. The terrain includes boggy sections, and the course is described as having moderate terrain with a profile between 200 meters and 500 meters of climb.

The course is fully marked with signposts and marshals stationed along the route. For safety reasons, the use of GPS devices is not allowed. All participants must carry Level B mandatory kit, which consists of the following items:

  • Waterproof jacket
  • Hat or buff
  • Gloves
  • Whistle
  • Charged mobile phone with emergency number stored
  • Foil blanket, bivvy bag, or equivalent

The event starts from the Gortin Glens car park. Following the race, the prize-giving ceremony is held at Gortin Glens Forest Park in Omagh. Due to the nature of the descent through boggy areas, trail shoes are the recommended footwear for this event. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
