Muir Woods Mountain Challenge
The Muir Woods Mountain Challenge, formerly known as Table Rock, is a trail running event held at Mt. Tamalpais State Park and Muir Woods National Monument. The race begins at Stinson Beach and utilizes a variety of terrain including technical dirt trails, fire roads, and steep sections with harrowing steps. The event has a total capacity of 300 participants across all distances.
The event offers three distinct course lengths:
- 30K: Approximately 18.8 miles with 4,950 feet of elevation gain.
- Half Marathon: 13.1 miles with 3,450 feet of elevation gain.
- 10K: Approximately 6.4 miles with 1,950 feet of elevation gain.
All courses begin with a significant ascent of 2,000 feet within the first two miles via the Willow Camp hill. Runners navigate the Coastal Trail, Matt Davis Trail, and the Dipsea Trail. The Half Marathon and 30K routes include a section through Muir Woods and a climb to the Cardiac Hill summit before descending back to the beach.
The event is cupless, requiring participants to carry their own water bottles or reusable containers. Aid stations along the course provide hydration and a variety of snacks, including fruit, pretzels, and energy products. Hiking poles are permitted. All finishers receive a custom medal, with trophies awarded to the top three overall male and female finishers in each distance.
Free parking is available at the Stinson Beach Day Use Area. Pets are permitted at the beach on a leash but are prohibited on the trails of Mt. Tamalpais. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
