Race Overview

The MTC Gelert is a 47-mile ultramarathon from Barmouth to Llanidloes, following the scenic National Cycle Route 8. It is also Day 3 of the multi-day CYMRUN challenge.

Route and Logistics

The course starts at the Sandbanks Hotel in Barmouth and finishes at the Red Lion Hotel in Llanidloes. There are five checkpoints along the route. Participants must maintain a minimum average pace of 4 mph; falling below this may result in withdrawal. Competitor numbers are capped at 40 (20 for the standalone event and 20 for CYMRUN participants).

Equipment and Rules

The event is cup-free; runners must bring their own reusable cup. Mandatory kit includes a backpack, head torch with spare batteries, route maps, a compass or GPS device, a whistle, a mobile phone, an emergency food pack, and a basic first aid kit. All participants are provided with a tracking device featuring an SOS button. Medical assistance is available, but participants must be at least 20 years old.

Entry and Fees

Entry fees are non-refundable. Two entry options are available:

  • MTC Gelert entry: £90.00.
  • MTC Gelert Plus Race Package: £155.00, which includes an embroidered race shirt and a hi-viz jacket. This option must be selected at least four weeks before the event.

A deferral option to the following year is available for a £15 fee up to four weeks before the race. Personal cancellation insurance can be purchased at checkout.

Prizes and Recognition

All finishers receive a bespoke Gelert medal. The male and female champions also receive a unique race trophy. The event is quadrennial, with the next editions in 2026 and 2030. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
