Event

The MTC Gelert is a 47-mile ultra running event held on 16 April 2026. It is the third day of the six-day MTC CYMRUN end-to-end of Wales and forms part of the Mount to Coast End to End Challenge Series. This edition is the first for Gelert and the event is staged once every four years, returning in 2030. All finishers receive a bespoke Gelert medal; male and female champions also receive trophies. Entry fees are listed as £90.00 for the race and £155.00 for a plus package that includes an embroidered race shirt and a lightweight hi-viz jacket (clothing guarantee requires ordering at least four weeks before the event). Entry payments are non-refundable; a personal cancellation insurance option and a defer option (fee applies) are available.

Route and logistics

The route follows National Cycle Route 8 from Barmouth to Llanidloes, with the final just over a mile extending into Llanidloes. Start and finish locations are identified as the Sandbanks Hotel, Barmouth, and the Red Lion Hotel, Llanidloes. Total ascent is given as 6,845 ft and total descent as 6,315 ft. Competitor places are limited to 20, with an additional allowance of 20 for CYMRUN entrants (maximum 40). Checkpoints and distances include:

  • CP3: Forge Rd / Machynlleth : 26.4 miles

Competitors must carry mandatory kit (backpack, head torch with spare batteries, provided maps, compass or GPS, whistle, mobile phone, basic first aid and emergency food). Organisers provide a tracking device and real-time tracking during the race. The event is cup-free; participants must bring a reusable cup.
