MTC Gelert - Race overview

The MTC Gelert is a single-day ultra race on 16th April 2026. The event distance is 47 miles and it is the third day of the MTC CYMRUN six-day end-to-end of Wales. All finishers receive a bespoke Gelert medal. Male and female champions receive bespoke trophies. This is the first edition of the MTC Gelert.

Route, logistics and entry

The route follows National Cycle Route 8 from Barmouth to Llanidloes, with a short extension of just over one mile at the end into Llanidloes. The start is at Sandbanks Hotel, Marine Parade, Barmouth, LL42 1NE. The finish is at the Red Lion Hotel, Longbridge Street, Llanidloes, SY18 6EE. Competitor numbers are limited to 20 plus an additional allowance of 20 CYMRUN competitors, for a maximum of 40.

The organiser requires a mandatory kit list including a backpack, head torch with spare batteries, provided route maps, compass or GPS, whistle, mobile phone, emergency food (two chocolate bars), and a basic first aid kit. Competitors must bring a reusable cup as the race is cup-free. The race uses tracking devices with SOS functionality and provides GPX/maps to entrants four weeks before the event. Entrants must be 20 years or over. Entry is non-refundable; fees are: MTC Gelert £90, or MTC Gelert Plus Race Package £155 (includes shirt and hi-viz jacket if ordered at least four weeks before the event).
