MTC Afanc : event overview

The MTC Afanc is an ultra running event on 18 April 2026. It forms Day 5 of the Mount to Coast CYMRUN and is part of the Mount to Coast End to End Challenge Series. The race is a single-day event covering a total distance of 39.7 miles and is described as the first edition. The route follows National Cycle Route 8 from the River Wye Activity Centre, Glasbury, to Merthyr Tydfil.

Entries, rules and logistics

Entries are limited to 20 race-only competitors plus an additional allowance of 20 CYMRUN competitors (maximum 40). All entrants must be 20 years or over on the race day. Entry fee is listed at £90; an upgraded package at £155 includes an embroidered race shirt and a lightweight hi-viz jacket if ordered at least four weeks before the event. All fees are non-refundable; a defer option is offered for a fee. The organiser provides each competitor with a tracking device that includes an SOS function. Maps and GPX files are supplied to entrants before the race.

Mandatory kit, checkpoints and support

The event is cup-free; competitors must bring a reusable cup. Mandatory kit includes a backpack, head torch with spare batteries, provided route maps, compass or GPS device, whistle, mobile phone, emergency food and a basic first aid kit. Checkpoints are located at approximately 8.6 miles, 17.2 miles and 28.1 miles, with the finish at about 39.7 miles. The race enforces a minimum average pace of 4.0 mph and may withdraw competitors who fall below that standard. Finishers receive an Afanc medal; male and female champions receive trophies.
