The MTC Afanc is a one-day ultra held on 18 April 2026. It is part of the Mount to Coast End to End Challenge Series and forms Day 5 of the CYMRUN six-day end-to-end of Wales. The race is a single-stage route of approximately 39.7 miles and is the first edition of this event.

Course and logistics

The route follows National Cycle Route 8 for the entire course, starting at the River Wye Activity Centre in Glasbury and finishing at the Travelodge, Merthyr Tydfil. Total ascent is listed at 4,214 ft with total descent of 3,925 ft. Maps and GPX files are supplied by the organiser to entrants about four weeks before the event. The race is cup-free; competitors must bring a reusable cup.

Entry, cut-offs and equipment

Entry is limited to 20 race-only competitors, with an additional allowance of 20 CYMRUN competitors (maximum 40). Entrants must be at least 20 years old. The event enforces preset cut-offs based on a minimum average speed of 4.0 mph; competitors who fall below this threshold may be withdrawn. Entry fee and package options are stated at £90.00 for the race or £155.00 for a package that includes an embroidered race shirt and lightweight hi-viz jacket (guarantee requires purchase at least four weeks before the event). All entry fees are non-refundable; a defer option of £15 is available up to four weeks before the race.

Mandatory kit includes a backpack, head torch with spare batteries, provided route maps, compass or GPS device, whistle, mobile phone, basic first aid and emergency food. Entrants receive a tracking device with an SOS function. Finishers receive an Afanc medal; male and female champions receive bespoke trophies.
