MTC Afanc - Mount to Coast Afanc Ultra Marathon

The MTC Afanc is a single-day ultra event scheduled for 18 April 2026. It forms Day 5 of the Mount to Coast CYMRUN end-to-end of Wales and follows National Cycle Route 8 for the entire route, running from the River Wye Activity Centre in Glasbury to Travelodge Merthyr Tydfil. The course distance is approximately 39.7 miles.

Entry is limited to 20 race-only competitors with an additional allowance of 20 CYMRUN entrants, giving a maximum field of 40. The event uses preset cut-off times based on a minimum average speed of 4.0 mph; competitors who do not meet this requirement may be withdrawn. All finishers receive an Afanc medal and male and female champions receive bespoke trophies. Competitors may upgrade their entry to include an official race shirt and a lightweight hi-viz jacket as an optional purchase at checkout.

Competitors must be aged 20 or over on race day and carry mandatory kit. Required items include a backpack, head torch with spare batteries, the official route maps, compass or GPS device, whistle, mobile phone, a basic first aid kit and an emergency food pack. The race is cup-free so competitors should use a reusable cup. Organisers provide tracking devices and mapping information to entrants; GPX and maps are emailed to competitors prior to the event.
