MTC Afanc

The MTC Afanc is a single-day ultra held on a published route of 39.7 miles. The course follows National Cycle Route 8 from the River Wye Activity Centre in Glasbury to the Travelodge in Merthyr Tydfil. The event forms one day of the six-day MTC CYMRUN end-to-end challenge.

Competitor numbers are limited to 20, with an additional allowance of 20 places for CYMRUN entrants, giving a maximum field of 40. The organisers operate preset cut-off points based on a minimum average speed of 4.0 miles per hour; competitors who fall below this minimum can be withdrawn. The race is cup-free and competitors must provide their own reusable cup.

Maps and GPX files are provided to entrants only and are emailed about four weeks before the event. The organisers supply individual tracking devices with SOS functions for use during the race. Typical checkpoint food items include malt loaf, cake, sandwiches, sweets, squash, cola and water.

Mandatory kit includes a backpack or equivalent, head torch with spare batteries, route maps as provided, compass or GPS device, whistle, mobile phone, a basic first aid kit and a waterproof map case. All finishers receive an Afanc medal. Male and female champions are awarded bespoke trophies; the trophies are currently in the design stage.

Entry is non-refundable. A race package option includes an embroidered race shirt and a lightweight hi-vis jacket, with clothing guaranteed only if ordered at least four weeks before the event. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
