Mountain Mist is a 32nd annual trail ultramarathon held at Monte Sano State Park. The event distance is 50K (about 31.1 miles). The course uses park and land trust trails and includes rocky single-track, mud, creek crossings, rock walls, stone cuts, and sink holes. Total climb is about 4,300 feet. The route includes a steep section on the Waterline Trail that requires upper body effort and a final six-mile section that drops into and climbs out of McKay Hollow.
Course, entry and logistics
Registration is online only, with a field limit of 525 accepted runners; the race closes on Jan 17 and there are no refunds, no race-day registration, no entry transfers, and no deferrals. Race management may deny entry to anyone who does not show an appropriate endurance background. There is a strict time limit of about 9 hours 30 minutes and multiple checkpoints with enforced cutoffs; runners who miss cutoffs will be removed from the course.
Packet pickup is scheduled at the Monte Sano Lodge on the day before the race and there is a late pickup on race morning. Course GPX was made available on Garmin Connect for prior years. Major aid stations are located at O'Shaughnessy Point (4.3 mi), Closed Bankhead (11.4 mi), Oak Park Ball Fields (14 mi), Land Trust (20 mi), Trough Springs (25 mi), Rest Shelter Hill (29.5 mi), and the finish (31.1 mi). Medical and evacuation support are provided by HEMSI HART Rescue Team and Huntsville Cave Rescue Unit.
Rules and awards
Prohibited items include strollers, bicycles, animals, unauthorized vehicles, and similar equipment; violators will be disqualified. The use of headphones is strongly discouraged.
