Dragon’s Back Race® : overview

The Dragon’s Back Race® is a multi-stage ultra running event across Wales. The Full Dragon is a six-day course covering 380 km with 16,400 m of ascent, following the mountainous spine of Wales from Conwy Castle to Cardiff Castle. The event is held in September; the 2026 edition is scheduled for 7-12 September 2026.

Race formats and route details

The event offers several formats. Dragon’s Fire, new for 2026, is a two-day introduction that begins at Conwy Castle and includes the most challenging terrain of the event. Dragon’s Tail, also new for 2026, covers the final chapters of the route over two days, traversing Bannau Brycheiniog and finishing at Cardiff Castle. The Hatchling allows participants to choose part of the daily route, typically either the first half or the second half on a given day. The race lists a presenting sponsor and several partner brands.
