Event Overview
The Mogollon Monster is a trail running event held on the Mogollon Rim near Pine, Arizona, approximately 90 minutes northeast of Phoenix. It features two race distances: a 100-mile ultramarathon and a 42 km (marathon) race. The event takes runners through a variety of terrain, from high Sonoran Desert to the world's largest contiguous Ponderosa Pine forest.
Course Details
The 100-mile course is approximately 102.3 miles long with roughly 15,900 feet of total elevation gain. The 42 km course is approximately 26.7 miles long with about 4,554 feet of elevation gain. Both races involve navigating the Mogollon Rim, with the 100-mile race climbing the Rim six separate times. The course is described as rugged and technical, with some climbs and descents featuring grades of 30-45%.
Elevations range from about 5,200 feet to a maximum of 8,000 feet. Key trails include the Highline Trail, Donahue Trail, Myrtle Trail, and Promontory Point.
Logistics
The 100-mile race starts at the Two-Sixty Trailhead, and the 42 km race starts at the Pine Trailhead. Both finish at the Pine Community Center in Pine, Arizona. A shuttle service transports runners from a designated parking area to the start lines.
Bib and packet pickup occurs on the Friday before the race and again on race mornings at the respective start lines. There are several aid stations along the courses, with drop bag locations for the 100-mile race at Fish Hatchery, Buck Springs, and Geronimo. Crew access is allowed only at designated locations.
Requirements and Information
A qualification is required for the 100-mile race: entrants must have completed a 50-mile or longer race prior to race day. The 100-mile event also includes an 8-hour volunteer service requirement or a suggested donation to a trail organization.
The 2026 Mogollon Monster 100-mile race is a qualifier for the 2027 Hardrock 100 and the 2027 Western States 100.
