Mantario Marathon : two day self supported stage event
The Mantario Marathon is a two day, self supported stage run on the Mantario Trail in Whiteshell, Manitoba. The total distance is listed as 64 km, split into two stages of about 32 km each with an overnight camp at Moosehead Lake.
On day one the field starts together at the Caddy Lake South Mantario Trailhead and finishes at the Moosehead overnight campsite. Participants camp in wilderness conditions with no services. Day two uses a reversed start order based on individual times or placements from the first day and finishes at the Big Whiteshell North Mantario Trailhead.
The event is a Fat Ass style event: no entry fee, no organized aid, no swag and no formal race organization or insurance. All competitors must be fully self sufficient and carry food, water, shelter, clothing, navigation tools, first aid and any other gear needed to safely spend the night and complete both days. Participants are asked to assist others in need, pack out all waste and not burn garbage.
The route is not marked. Competitors should be experienced with trail navigation, able to follow the Mantario Trail using maps, compass or GPS, and prepared for frequent water crossings, wet and slippery sections, complex route finding and more than 1500 metres of cumulative elevation change. Registration closes September 20. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
