LDWA South Downs Marathon 2026
The LDWA South Downs Marathon is a distance event for walkers and runners held in the South Downs National Park. The routes start and finish at East Dean Village Hall, located near Eastbourne. Participants navigate through various landmarks, including the Seven Sisters, Cuckmere Haven, and several downland villages.
The event offers two distinct route options:
- 28 miles with over 4,000 feet of total ascent.
- 18 miles with over 2,800 feet of total ascent.
The longer course visits Firle and Firle Beacon, while the shorter route returns from Alfriston on an alternative path. All participants have a maximum time limit of 11 hours to complete their chosen distance. Registration takes place on the morning of the event at the village hall, where parking and luggage storage are provided. The venue is accessible via bus routes from Eastbourne and Brighton.
Entrants are required to carry a printed or digital route description and maps covering the area, such as OS Landranger 198/199 or Explorer 123/OL25. Each participant must also bring their own drinking vessel. The organizers provide two to three checkpoints along the course offering food and refreshments with vegetarian options. A light hot meal is served at the finish, and finishers within the time limit receive an emailed certificate.
The event is open to both LDWA members and non-members. Participants under 18 may take part if accompanied by a responsible adult and with prior written parental consent. No entries are accepted on the day of the event, and dogs are not permitted with the exception of assistance dogs. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
