Event Overview
The LDWA South Downs Marathon is a distance event organized by the Sussex branch of the Long Distance Walkers Association. Based at East Dean Village Hall near Eastbourne, the routes traverse the South Downs National Park, passing through locations such as the Seven Sisters, Cuckmere Haven, and several traditional downland villages.
Participants can choose between two route options:
- 28 miles: Features over 4000 feet of total ascent and includes passage through Firle and Firle Beacon.
- 18 miles: Features over 2800 feet of total ascent, omitting the Firle area and returning on an alternative path from Alfriston.
Course Details and Requirements
The event is open to both walkers and runners. All participants must complete their chosen course within an 11-hour time limit. The 28-mile route includes three checkpoints, while the 18-mile route includes two. These stations provide food and refreshments with vegetarian options.
Entrants are required to carry a printed or digital route description at all times. If using electronic devices for navigation, participants must carry enough battery power for 15 hours. Each participant must also bring their own drinking vessel. Finishers receive an emailed certificate and a hot meal at the end of the event.
Logistics
The event headquarters is located at East Dean Village Hall, which is accessible via the A259 or by bus routes from Eastbourne and Brighton. On-site facilities include luggage storage and car parking in an adjacent field. Registration occurs on the morning of the event. Dogs are not permitted, with the exception of assistance dogs.
