Last of the Felascans
Last of the Felascans is a Backyard Ultra held in Alachau, FL at San Felasco Hammock Preserve State Park. The race uses a repeating loop format in which competitors run a 4.167 mile loop each hour. A runner is eliminated if they do not complete a loop within the hour. The loop distance is 100 divided by 24 so a competitor who completes a full day runs 100 miles.
The course follows trails in daylight and a dirt road after dark; there is no pavement on either route. There is no predefined finish. The winner is the competitor who completes a loop that no other competitor completes. If no competitor outlasts every other competitor, no winner is declared.
Each runner may set up a 10 foot by 10 foot base camp at the start/finish area. There are no aid stations on course and no aid is allowed outside the start/finish area. Bathrooms and water are available at the start/finish. Ice may be available. Whistles will sound at 3, 2, and 1 minute before the start of each loop. Shirts will be provided and the final competitor receives a trophy; no other swag is offered.
Race rules require runners to be in the starting corral and to start when the bell rings, and to receive no assistance after the bell until they complete the loop. There are no refunds for dropouts; fees from dropouts are donated to Friends of San Felasco. The event is organized by Mule Racing. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
