Knock Ma Mountain Run

The Knock Ma mountain run takes place in County Galway, centering around the car park of Knockma Hill. This event is part of the Galway League and features a course over marked terrain with significant elevation changes. The primary route covers a distance of 9.60 km with a total ascent of 359 m, categorizing the difficulty based on its 200m - 500m climb and easy terrain classification.

Participants can choose from the following distances:

  • 9.60 km (Main course with 359 m climb)
  • 4.00 km (Short course / Junior route)

The event organizers enforce a mandatory kit requirement (Level B) for all runners to ensure safety on the mountain. This equipment includes a waterproof jacket, a hat or buff, gloves, a whistle, a charged mobile phone with an emergency number stored, and a foil blanket or bivvy bag. Participants must bring these items to the race, though the specific items required to be carried during the run are determined by the officials on the day based on local conditions.

The start and finish lines are located at the Knockma car park. As this is a public space, participants are encouraged to carpool or cycle to the venue. The competition has an entry limit of 250 runners. While mountain running often involves navigation, this specific course is fully marked, and the use of GPS devices for navigation is not permitted.
