Kings Garn Gutter is an orienteering event in the New Forest on Sunday 11th January. Entries close on 4th January and entry places are limited to 250. The event counts towards the South Central Orienteering League and is the fourth SCOL event of the season. Entry fees vary by category; standard senior entry is £14 and junior entry is £7, with higher fees for later entries and small supplements for non-members and chip hire. SI dibber timing is used; hire is available and lost dibbers are charged at £32 (£68 for SIAC). Maps will be limited based on entries as of 4th January.

Location, courses and facilities

The event area covers Long Beech, Kings Garn Gutter and Salisbury Trench Inclosures. Parking is on the hardstanding areas of Ocknell Campsite (grid SU253120, postcode SO43 7HH). Competitors follow a taped route of about 1.7 km from parking to the Start; a minor road must be crossed to get to the Start and from the Finish and that crossing will not be manned. First aid is available near the Finish.

  • 3.6 km Light Green - good for improving orienteers
  • 3.3 km Orange - novice, mostly on paths
  • 2.7 km Yellow - novice, all on paths
  • 1.7 km White - novice, all on paths

Terrain is generally runnable forest with paths and rides. The map scale is 1:10,000 with 5 m contours, updated Autumn 2024. Portable toilets, catering and a clothing dump are provided. Dogs are not allowed in the competition area. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
