Keweenaw Ultramarathon
The Keweenaw Ultramarathon takes place on the Michigan Technological University Tech Trails in Houghton, Michigan. The event offers two trail distances:
- 50K
- 25K
The 25K course is one loop; 50K participants run the same loop twice. The route is marked with neon flags on the right-hand side and closed trails are marked with caution tape. A Strava route and a PNG overview of the loop are published by the organizers for planning purposes. A headlamp is required for the early portion of the 50K.
Aid stations are located at the main trailhead and at Nara, with station encounters at miles 4.2, 11.8, 15.6, 19.8, and 27.4. Stations provide water, drink mix, and common ultra foods. All athletes must check in at every aid station by reporting their bib number to a volunteer. Runners may retrieve gear from the community room, a tent, or their parked car at the trailhead after checking in.
Bibs are picked up the morning of the race in specified windows for each distance. The event is timed through UltraSignup and there is no live tracking. Cutoff times are in place: 8 hours for the 50K and 7 hours for the 25K. Pacers are not allowed. Runners will cross Pilgrim Road multiple times; an assistant will be present but will not stop road traffic.
Parking is at the main trailhead with overflow in the nearby field; Nara parking is available for volunteers and spectators. T-shirts are sold during the event for $20. Awards are given to the top athlete in each distance and additional prizes are distributed during the day. Results are published on UltraSignup.
