Keweenaw Ultramarathon
The Keweenaw Ultramarathon is a fully supported trail event held at the Michigan Technological University Tech Trails in Houghton, MI, off the south side of Sharon Avenue across from Sherman Field. Two distances are offered:
- 50K
- 25K
The 25K is one loop of the course; the 50K is two loops. The 50K requires a headlamp for the initial portion of the race. Races are timed through UltraSignup and have strict cut-off times: the 50K has an 8-hour limit and the 25K has a 7-hour limit. Awards are provided to the top athlete in each distance and official results are published on UltraSignup.
Course and logistics
The route is marked with neon flags on the right-hand side; flags on the left indicate the wrong direction. Closed trails are marked with caution tape. Aid stations are located near the main trailhead and at Nara, with service points at miles 4.2 (6.8 km), 11.8 (19 km), 15.6 (25.1 km), 19.8 (31.9 km), and 27.4 (44.1 km). Aid stations provide water, drink mix, and typical ultra foods; athletes must check in at every aid station by reporting their bib number. Drop bags and personal gear may be stored in the community room, under a tent, or in vehicles and can be accessed after checking in at the trailhead aid station. Parking is at the main trailhead with overflow field parking and a separate Nara lot. Pacers are not allowed. Road crossings of Pilgrim Road occur on course; volunteers will assist but will not stop traffic. Merchandise T-shirts are sold during the event for $20.
