The Highland Fling Ultramarathon is a point-to-point trail race on Saturday 29 August 2026. The course covers 53 miles (85 km) along the southern section of the West Highland Way, from Milngavie to Tyndrum through Loch Lomond & the Trossachs National Park. The route is way-marked and does not require navigation. Total ascent is 2300 m and total descent is 2100 m. Terrain is listed as approximately 90% trail and 10% road. The event uses live chip timing.

Post-race facilities include free home-made food and drinks, heated marquees, free showers, free post-race massage, and free official event photos. There is a drop-bag system with three food drop bags allowed. Luggage transport from the start to the finish is provided. Event buses are available for travel to and from the race at extra cost.

Entry, rules and requirements

Entries open 9 November 2025 and close 26 July 2026. Entry fee is £125. Entries so far are listed as 229 participants. Minimum age is 20 years on race day; there is no upper age limit. Deferrals are only allowed for pregnancy or adoption. Refunds: full refund (minus £5 admin fee) if withdrawn within 14 days; 50% refund available until 1 July 2026; no refunds after 1 July 2026. No place transfers.

To qualify, entrants must have completed an ultramarathon, a road marathon or a trail marathon after 1 January 2024. Road marathon finish times must be under 5 hours unless the marathon was part of an Ironman. Trail marathons and ultramarathons have no time limit. The deadline to meet the entry criteria is 1 June 2026.

Race rules require no external support, no pacers, and no dogs. Mandatory kit includes an emergency foil blanket, a waterproof jacket with taped seams, waterproof trousers with taped seams, a head torch, and a charged mobile phone. Running poles are allowed from 7.5 miles onwards. The use of NSAIDs as race-day painkillers is forbidden. The event has an active gender entry system with places initially allocated by gender and an option to enter as nonbinary. The race supports a local charity partner.
