Highland Fling Ultramarathon
The Highland Fling is a point-to-point trail ultramarathon on Saturday 29 August 2026. The race follows the southern section of the West Highland Way through Loch Lomond & the Trossachs National Park from Milngavie to Tyndrum. The course distance is 53 miles (85 km) with about 2300 m ascent and 2100 m descent. Terrain is listed as 90% trail and 10% road. The route is waymarked and uses live chip timing.
Event services, rules and facilities
The event provides free luggage transport from the start to the finish and a drop bag system with three food drop bags available. Finish-line facilities include free showers, home-made food and drinks, heated marquees, post-race massage, and free official photos. There is an afterparty in a marquee (BYOB and donation bar). Event buses are available pre-race from Tyndrum and Glasgow West End and post-race from Tyndrum back to Milngavie for an extra cost.
Runners must carry specified safety kit: an emergency foil blanket, a waterproof jacket with hood and taped seams, waterproof trousers with taped seams, a headtorch or lamp, and a charged mobile phone. External support and pacers are not allowed. Running poles are permitted from 7.5 miles (CP1 Beechtree). The use of ibuprofen, diclofenac, or other NSAIDs as race-day painkillers is forbidden. Race numbers must be worn on the front and littering is prohibited.
Entry and eligibility
Entry fee is £125. Minimum age is 20 on race day. To qualify, entrants must have completed an ultramarathon, a road marathon or a trail marathon after 1 January 2024. Road-marathon finishers must have a time under 5 hours unless the marathon was part of an Ironman; trail-marathon and ultramarathon finishes have no time limit. Qualifying races may be completed up to 1 June 2026. The event uses an active gender entry system with initial allocations of 500 places for women and 500 places for men and an option to enter as nonbinary.
Refunds: a 14-day cooling-off full refund minus a £5 admin fee; after 14 days a 50% refund is available until 1 July 2026; after that no refunds.
