The Highland Fling Ultramarathon is a point-to-point trail race on Saturday 29 August 2026. The route follows the southern section of the West Highland Way through Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, from Milngavie to Tyndrum. The race distance is 53 miles (85 km).
Race details
The course has approximately 2300 m of ascent and 2100 m of descent and is about 90% trail and 10% road. The route is way-marked so no navigation is required. Race services include live chip timing, drop bag provision (three food drop bags), free luggage transport from start to finish, free showers, free post-race massage, heated marquees and home-made food and drinks at the finish, official event photos, sponsor stalls, and an afterparty in a marquee (BYOB and donation bar). Event buses are available to and from the race start and finish for an extra cost.
Entry, rules and inclusivity
Minimum age is 20 years on race day. Entry fee is £125. Entry requires proof of a qualifying race completed after 1 January 2024 (ultramarathon, trail marathon, or road marathon under five hours; Ironman marathon exceptions noted). The event uses an active gender entry system with allocations for women, men and a nonbinary option. Key rules include no external support or pacers, mandatory kit (emergency foil blanket, waterproof jacket and trousers with taped seams, headtorch and charged mobile phone), no NSAID use on race day, limited earphone use, and no littering. Running poles are allowed from 7.5 miles (CP1 Beechtree) onwards. Refund and deferral conditions are published, including a 14 day cooling-off period.
