Hell Creek Half & 50K

The event takes place on the single-track Switchgrass Mountain Bike Trail at Wilson State Park, much of which runs beside Wilson Lake. The trail is exposed and hilly with minimal wooded sections, and the route will be heavily marked with ribbons and wrong-way signs.

Distances

  • Half marathon - ~13 miles, one loop, first 1/3 mile on pavement
  • 50k - 19-mile loop then half-marathon loop; total near 32 miles

Both distances use the same trail segments and share two full aid stations located at the start/finish and at a location called Hell Hill. Aid stations will provide water, soda, typical ultra food, and Proxima C endurance fuel. An unmanned water and Proxima C station is located at mile 5, with an additional station near mile 13 on the Hell Creek Loop that applies to 50k runners. Volunteers will be stationed at Hell Hill to assist with course routing.

There is a common cutoff at 5:00 PM, which corresponds to approximately 9 hours for the 50k and 8.75 hours for the half marathon. Early check-in is available the evening before the event. Facilities include restrooms at the start/finish, porta-potties near the other aid, and year-round hot showers at Big Bluestem campground about 3/4 mile from the start/finish.

Awards are given to the top three male and female finishers in each distance. Race swag includes a tank top for entrants and finisher items: a medal for half finishers and a 50k belt buckle for 50k finishers. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
