HELIOS
HELIOS is a timed trail ultra held in the Southern Kettle Moraine Forest near Eagle, Wisconsin. The event offers timed 6 hour, 12 hour, and 20 hour formats. Entrants may race solo or as a relay team of up to four people. The field is capped at 150 runners.
The objective is to complete as many loops as possible during the chosen timeframe. All loops start and finish at the main trailhead, called the HELIOS Village, where team exchanges occur in a designated runner exchange zone. A cabin at the trailhead provides a place to warm up and refuel; the parking area sits next to the trailhead and can be used to store gear. Twenty hour participants have a designated drop bag area inside the shelter.
Timing is handled manually by volunteers. Each lap runners report their athlete wristband number and the color of the loop they completed to the timing station. Results are posted in the cabin shortly after the race and final results are posted to the event website.
Merchandise and event items include a HELIOS trucker hat, a wooden finisher medal, and a race decal. On-course amenities listed include bottomless coffee, tea, and hot chocolate for runners who bring a cup, and burgers or a similar post or during race meal.
